Domestic Terrorism and a Trickle-Down Theory of 80s Nostalgia

In these frightening times, with threats of violence and extremism occurring more and more in our political discourse, I'd like to take this time to focus in on one specific issue dealing with the Militia movement - their taste in music.

Over the weekend, the FBI arrested members of an insane, apocalyptic Christian group that called itself Hutaree, for some reason. Like all crazy people these days, they uploaded potentially-incriminating videos and information all over the internet before entering the final stages of planning for their mission to murder police officers and their families and start a Christian race war against the government or something.

As I was watching some of the fake-guerrilla warfare porn Hutaree made to promote itself, I was a bit shocked by the fact that these crazy right wing extremists are listening to Post-punk music! For a few of their videos they use music by a British pioneering goth band from the 80s, The Sisters of Mercy.

The explanation I came up with was this: we're just coming out of a decade that had a heavy nostalgia for this kind of post-punk/goth/80s/industrial/dance kind of stuff, but that wave may not have worn its way through all levels of society until now. Earlier on in the decade it was liberal arts school kids who were into the post-punk shit (myself included), then by 2009 some of the dance/fashion stuff hit the Wal-Mart crowd through Lady Gaga, and now it's trickled down through all the different layers of social degenerates until it hit the extreme christian, Turner Diaries-reading far right.

This could have some pretty great consequences as this new wave of the militia movement comes out and we see a resurgence in domestic terrorism. As if a cop-murdering Christian group that listens to goth rock wasn't bad enough, it may not be long before we see a Pabst-drinking, trucker hat and American Apparel-wearing Timothy McVeigh....

Anyway, here's Hutaree training, or something, set to "Marian" by The Sisters of Mercy, from their 1985 album First and Last and Always.

Allow Me to totally CAMP OUT for a Moment...

I picked up this video from Daventry Blue and I keep watching it because it's awesome. It's breakfast with Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli. I can't wait to see more from the two guys who made it.

What the World looks like after leaving the Black Party

Late Saturday night and into Sunday morning, I got to experience my first Black Party - my first real circuit party, for that matter. I got there early, around 11, because I had to be there before midnight to take advantage of their $40 twink price. I saw lots of hot guys there, ran into some friends, and managed to get myself some action; thanks in part to my hot new Nasty Pig fighting shorts.

Ninth Avenue, Hell's Kitchen, 8:00 am

It was a fun time, but I have to say I was kind of disappointed based on all the stories I've heard about it, because the people who run the party made some changes this year that didn't seem to be going over well. One of the most significant of these changes was that there was no sex allowed in the stage shows this year. I'd always heard stories about how crazy the shows got, but this year the ones that I saw had no real action in them and were much tamer than what I might have seen at an event like Folsom East. Another thing that sucked was that this year the entire second floor of the party was closed off to anyone who didn't have a VIP ticket. The party had sold out of VIP tickets pretty quickly, though from down below it didn't look like there were many people up there, so I don't know what the deal was (I can't confirm it, but I heard from someone that there were real sex shows going on up there at one point, but someone else said there was nothing happening up there and it was lame).

To top it all off, there were no darkrooms. Those had been shut down for this year, like the sex shows, because they didn't want to come off as promoting sex or something. Needless to say, people were pissed off. Pretty much everyone I talked to said that it would be their last time coming, and that they'd turned off a lot of their regular partiers. I dunno, maybe this is something the circuit queens say every year, or maybe not. It seems ridiculous to me that they would be worried about being shut down for sex stuff while not caring about how out in the open drugs were. It crossed my mind that they might have just done things this way to try to get people to buy VIP tickets next year.

Anyway, it was a fun night, though I felt like I'd been cheated out of a real Black Party experience like I'd always heard about. I'll be more inclined to go again next year if they ease up on the sex restrictions, and if they at least open up their VIP section to the under 26 crowd!

And because there were no cameras or phones allowed (though everyone brought their iPhones in, and I checked mine like a bitch), what I have to show for myself instead is pics of my surreal early morning journey from the party back to the Connecticut subrubs with a severe hangover. They'll have to do in place of slutty fuck pics I might have been able to take at a different event. The trip back was actually kind of pretty and pleasant, when I was able to ignore the headache. Ever since a semi-traumatizing experience from my freshman year of college, I always associate the Cocteau Twins album Head over Heels as being what a severe and well-deserved hangover sounds like, so imagine that playing in the background and enjoy.

42nd Street, there was some kind of Marathon going on

It had been a while since my last early morning Metro North ride, which is weird because it's making me feel old, and college seem distant already.

Warm Thoughts, Pictures from Key West

Last week, my friend Neil the Erotic Hypnotist came back from a week-long vacation at the Island House in Key West. You might remember that I went there with him in October (see earlier post). I had hoped to go this time, but financial reasons (the recession...) prevented me from going during their main season. Now I'm saving up and I can't wait to make it back there.

Anyway, while I was up here dealing with it being winter, Neil sent me some pics of the scenery to warm me up. I thought I'd post this nice sunset pic he sent, hoping it'll be summer up here soon too.

And here's a picture of a cat hanging out near the Island House, because I like cats.
